Technical Development, Modernisation and Innovation Manager, Sheffield Hallam University

Karen started her career as a technician in a food testing laboratory, worked in vaccine manufacture and for the Ministry of Agriculture and fisheries in New Zealand. She returned to the UK to study for her PhD in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the University of Sheffield, before embarking on her career at Sheffield Hallam University. Starting life as a Bioscience technician, nearly 20 years ago, and then moving up to technical team leader, Karen is now the Technical Development Manager and is responsible for delivery of Hallam’s Technician Commitment action plan. She actively supports technical colleagues with their career development and leads on the technical apprenticeship programme, having recruited 2 apprentices into the technical service. Outside of Hallam, Karen has previously been a specialist advisor at the NTDC and continues to be part of the Higher Education Trailblazer Consortium.
